Well I guess I should finish off March by saying it ended well and Matt and I did some more renovations, this time over at his parents house and started to redo his parents basement washroom, which meant gutting the whole thing and putting in new floors and fixtures and painting the small room. This was actually a lot of work and took longer than we thought it would. Matt worked on this throughout April and I helped until around the 14th.
April started off really well and then went to hell in a hand basket. This is hard for me to talk about but here I go.
On April 15th at approximately 9am the phone rang and for a change it was my father and he asked me in his scared voice which I rarely hear when I could be to Alberta. The reason was he had just told me Mom had been diagnosed that morning with cancer. Matt and I got on the computer and booked a flight as soon as we could to get me to Calgary, I left that day at 2pm and arrived in Calgary at 7pm their time and was met at the airport by my older brothers' wife whom I hadn't seen in years or even talked to in years. Adrienne gave me a ride to Mom and Dads farm. When I saw mom , you could actually see the tumor on the side of her face and it was pushing her eye out. I have actually never been so scared in my life and all I could do was be there for her. The next morning Mom and I had to take the 3 hour drive from the farm to Edmonton to see the Oncologist, sitting in the office and getting the final diagnosis with Mom and hearing the doctor explain things and seeing the actual picture and size of the tumor, he decided to have mom admitted to the University Hospital in Edmonton on the Monday following. Mom and I both in total shock drove back to the farm and just waited the weekend until Monday morning to make the trip back to Edmonton.
My next 3 weeks were spent in Edmonton with my days from 8am to 8pm beside Mom in the hospital and talking to doctors and nurses and phoning family and Matt with updates everyday. I spent my nights a my friends place in Edmonton. Mom went in for a biopsy on the following Wednesday and then on the Friday Dr. Seiklay came in and told us the type of Cancer and Moms' options.
The next steps for mom were to decide if she wanted to pursue treatments and which ones. All I could do is be there for her. I came back home to Vancouver on May 4th.
The next few months were filled with worry , a lot of phone calls back and forth and Mom going through an extensive Chemo treatment for 4 months, followed by a radiation treatment for 4 weeks.
During this time the strain on Matt and my relationship was extremely tense and hard for both of us, after I arrived home there were many arguments and again our relationship was very close to ending.
